The are side effects with acyclovir, but they are low, the headache, upset stomach or ache. all are below 6%. Never heard anything about menstrual problems with any of the 3 antiherpes meds., as with thirst and nervousness. As long as the correct dosing is being used, some can relieve the stomach-gastric problems through taking a snack before the med. The only drug that interferes with acyclovir is BENIMID which is a gout med and not used very much any more.
There is a very small number of people that do not tolerate the acyclovir drugs. The menstrual problems should be checked out for a cause other than from acyclovir, as with the nervousness/stress, which in itself high and long term stresses can increase the recurrence pattern.
